POLAR NORTH ATLANTIC MARGINS, LATE CENOZOIC EVOLUTION: A COLLABORATIVE EUROPEAN STUDY OF CONTINENTAL-MARINE INTERACTIONS DURING THE LATEST INTER-GLACIAL CYCLE

Objectif

Programme PONAM (Polar North Atlantic Margins, Late Cenozoic Evolution) is a collaborative European venture to investigate the mechanisms of glacial-interglacial changes which have dominated the evolution of the North Atlantic margins during the last 10 million years. In this framework one theme - COMIIG (Continental-Marine Interactions During the Latest Interglacial-Glacial Cycle) - will be devoted specifically to obtaining environmental parameters such as ice distribution and ocean circulation pattern for the period
130 000-10 000 yBP by absolute dating and high-resolution
statigraphic work. Scientists from eight European nations are expected to participate in the field work which will be carried out on land and at sea, along two transects across the east Greenland (Scoresby Sund) and Svalbard margins, running from inland to the mid-oceanic ridge.
