Objective
The proposed project aims to link up eight European centres having proven research experience in algebraic geometry to run a number of interrelated investigations of algebraic varieties. Over the last decades there has been a shift in the centre of activity in algebraic geometry away from Europe to the USA and Japan (and to some extent the USSR); one of the effects of the project should be to counteract this, by expanding and coordinating longstanding cooperation between a number of strong but isolated groups, and by enabling more young research workers in the field to remain in Europe. In some cases, pooling the resources of several will make it possible to work on problems which could not be attacked otherwise.
