High-nuclearity metal cluster compounds: chemically stabilized, mono-dispersed metal particles

Objective

The physical and chemical properties of high-nuclearity metal cluster compounds and of mono-dispersed metal colloids will be studied.
The two major scientific goals of this project will be the study of the physical and of thecatalytic properties as a function of metal particle size in these almost ideally monodispersive metal-nonmetal composites. Physical
studies will comprise: magnetic, conducting and dielectric properties, magnetic resonance techniques (NMR,ESR), Mössbauer effect, specific heat studies, optical spectroscopies, high-energy spectroscopies (XPS, PES, UPS), scanning tunneling microscopy and neutron scattering studies. Particular emphasis will be paid to the various spectroscopic techniques in order to observe the onset of such quantities as the surface plasma resonance and the
Fermi edge as the cluster size is increased. Theoretical calculations of the energy level structures of the metal clusters and of the effects of ligand coordination will be performed. A very important spin-off from our physical studies will be in the field of catalysis. In particular we expect to be
able to make catalysts of either "clothed" and "naked" metal cluster molecules on suitable supports, in the latter case by stripping of the ligand shells.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
