PV/DIESEL SYSTEMS ON BARGES IN GERMANY, FRANCE AND NETHERLANDS

Objective

To demonstrate and promote the use of PV generators on barges. The project will involve 44 barges, each with a PV generator rated at approximately 1 kWp. Special attention will be given to PV system controls and to encouraging the owners to use energy efficient appliances.

Conventional diesel/battery systems are used for electricity supplies on barges but for long periods at the dock-side this can give rise to noise and fume pollution as well as being expensive in fuel costs. An earlier project by ECOFYS (SE./00147/89/NL/..) installed 13 PV systems on barges in the Netherlands to meet these power requirements. The systems are reported to have operated successfully and further optimisation and extension to other operating countries is planned in this project proposal.
The project is based on the installation of PV arrays to be installed alongside existing Diesel generators on board 44 barges in Germany, France and the Netherlands. The PV arrays will be of similar construction to fit onto the existing wheelhouse roof at a nominal tilt angle since optimum orientation cannot be guaranteed whilst moored, or underway.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
