SOLAR PLANT OF SCIENCE-PARK GELSENKIRCHEN

Objective

To demonstrate and promote the use of grid connected PV generators integrated into the roofs of commercial buildings. This project involves the use of high efficiency PV cells in new large area modules. It also incorporates an array of PV modules built in the form of "Solar sails" as a promotional feature for the solar architecture.

The construction of the Science Park Gelsenkirchen represents an important phase of the economic recovery programme for the Northrhine-Westfalen area of the Ruhr. It has been established that the complex should reflect an overall aim of the development programme which is to include architectural and planning exemplars incorporating novel design and construction features.
Consequently it is considered an ideal opportunity to utilise grid-connected PV systems partly integrated into the building construction design. Full use will also be made of passive solar gain which will be controlled by means of a "dynamic glass wall" and space heating with waste heat from local utility plants. This project involves the installation of approximately 210 kWp within the first Phase of the programme.
The key feature of the integration is the fabrication of large area "Optisol" modules by resin-encapsulation of 123 mm square cells between two layers of glass.
