Objective
To demonstrate the economical potential and the benefits for the local and global environment of pv/battery systems for electric propulsion of boats with recreational and touristic purposes.
The main objective in selecting PV power is to avoid the pollution of the waterways and noise which arise from the use of conventional motors.
The ultimate aim is to open up a new pv-market of several hundreds of MW.
Two different strategies are used :
* Existing boats of private owners will be equipped with simple add-on-pc-electric drives.
* Professional ship-builders will modify existing boat designs, integrating the pv-electric drives into the boat.
A total of about 65 small leisure boats (47 in Netherlands, 15 in Germany) are fitted with PV generators and batteries to provide power for propulsion.
The pv generators, which in total have an array power of 45.6 kWp, vary in size from 100 Wp for a small motor yacht to 2500 Wp for a bicycle ferry.
The PV arrays will be mounted on the boats using a variety techniques to suit the different designs of the boats involved.
