VENTILATED SOLAR WINDOW-HEAT PUMP SYSTEM, FOR BUILDING HEATING

Objective

The project aims to demonstrate the commercial potential of a so-called "Solar Ventilated Window" (VSV) as a transparent energy saving prefabricated component. This element is applied in the restructuration of a old school building to reduce the heating load. The use of the VSV is complemented with a air-water heat pump as main heating system for the building.

The project is carried out during the restructuration of army barrack of the 19th centrury which was already converted to a school building in the years 1950.
The new heating system is composed of 2 subsystems. The first one is a series of solar ventilated windows on the south side of the building. The window consists of 2 glasses with an airspace of 7 cm in which venetian blinds are mounted and which can be manipulated and oriented manually. The curved side of the blinds are white (for reflection in summer) and black at the other side (for heat captation in winter). The air flux through the airspace is by thermosyphonic circulation through grilled openings at the bottom and top of the frames.
These openings are controlled manually according to the needs. Supplemental advantage f these windows concern the comfort, as daylighting and noise reduction.
The second subsystem, which will complement the heating needs consists of 2 heat pumps (one air-water and one water-water). It is intended to use the extracted air from the class room and/or ambient air as heat input for the heat pumps.
Some technical data of the building are :
- total useful surface (on 3 floors) : 3376 m2
- total windows surface : 993 m2 (246 m2 south)
- wall thickness : 50 cm
- climate : mediterraneal-dry
- useful surface concerned by the solar system : 1272 m2
The following designed energy consumptions are calculated :
1) the present heating needs : 535 mWh/year
2) with ventilated solar windows (VSV) : 382 mWh/year
3) 2) + heat recuperation system by heat pumps : 108 mWh/year
4) 3) + double glazing on N,W,E : 68 mWh/year
The ventilated solar windows permit a saving of 38 mWh/year as insulation and 114 mWh/year as solar gain. The heat pumps supply 56 mWh/year, obtained by the air extraction from the classrooms.
