INTERIOR INSULATING LOUVERS

Objetivo

To demonstrate that significant savings in heating energy and improvements in thermal and visual comfort can be obtained by the installation of internal insulating louvers on 67 m2 of south facing glazed school windows. Annual energy saving is estimated at 13.120 kWh or 42.7% of the heating requirements.
The energy gains of the 'louvers' are 70 kWh/year per square meter during the winter nights (due to reduced heat losses) and 83 kWh/year per square meter during daytime by direct utilization of solar energy (with the advantage of the absence of overheating and of an improved daylighting comfort).
Due to restricted application areas and a low commercial potential, the phase 3 (extension of internal insulating louvers to a primary school) and phase 4 (monitoring program for phase 3) are cancelled.
It should also be noted that the constructor of the louvers will abandon the further development of this product.
The technology used in this project is based on R&D work on MOBILE Insulation carried out by David Roditi in 1979, and subsequent developments and experimental applications to private houses and other installations.
The project concerns the extension of a primary school, and in particular two science classrooms, and, in a second phase, a library, staff offices and two additional classrooms.
Daylight mainly enters the South facing clearstory windows in all rooms and provides most of the school's space heating needs. This passive solar heating has the additional advantage of maintaining internal temperature sufficiently high during week days and holidays. This means that additional heating is only required prior to use of the facilities. The main problems caused by the large glaze areas are : sun glare which causes some discomfort and heat losses during hours of darkness.
The insulating louvers proposed have been developed to overcome such disadvantages by controlling solar gain, diffusing daylight and insulating the glazed area at night.
The system of interior insulating louvers is intented to replace venetian blinds which would normally be used. The system consists of pivoting louvers of 30 mm thick insulating panels. These are of polystyrene and are sandwiched between two layers of precoated, folded aluminium sheet. Thermal resistance is 1 m2 deg.C/W.
The louvers are actuated by a light-cell motor combined with manual control. Fresh air in the classrooms (18 m3/h/student) is achieved by natural ventilation, entering from air vents at floor level, leaving through vents in the clearstory windows. Closing the louvers at night stops the airflow.
During holidays and weekends when the school is generally unoccupied the system operates automatically, controlled by a light-cell. This makes passive solar heating possible, guaranteeing all heating requirements: 14 deg.C during unoccupied periods of less than 48 hours and 8 deg.C during periods equal to/or longer than 48 hours. The auxiliary school heating provided by electric convectors, is switched on immediately prior to the arrival of the students so that the building's temperature is 18 deg.C before that start of classes, and is switched off immediately after. During the hours of darkness classroom temperature drops slowly. The minimum calculated temperature with the louvers closed is 14.5 deg.C which makes heating unnecessary during unoccupied hours. Without the louvers classroom temperature drops to 11.5 deg.C at which level heating would be required.
