Objective
To determine the feasibility of using solar energy for temperature regulation during biogas production.
Despite the addition of waste fish and the fact that energy saved by the solar installation improved the available volume of biogas, total biogas production failed to reach forecast levels.
The corregated roof panels supplied less energy than non-corregated ones and the quantity of energy supplied by the collectors was also below forecast.
The selected farms breed 2,000 pigs which produce 10 m3 pig manure per day. Yearly this averages to 3,325 m3 pig manure.
The biogas produced can be used in a boiler for auxiliary heatings or further stored under 15 bar pressure.
The digested sludge is stored.
The methane digester is loaded daily with 6-14 m3 pig manure according to the energy demand. The mean detention time is 15 d. 50,000 m3 biogas were initially expected yearly of which normally 15,000 m3 should be recycled for heating the methane digester and 35,000 m3 available for external use. The solar heat collecting system was initially expected to satisfy 80% of that demand so that anextra 12,000 m3 biogas would become available as only 3,000 m3 biogas remained to be recycled.
The system proved to work satisfactorily from a technical point of view. 77 thermal MWh-1 are needed per year. 63 thermal MWh-1 are collected, thus covering 80% of the demand. This is independent of low biogas production (1/10 of expected).
Solar panels are used in this biogas production system which is comprised of a digester tank, gasholder, gas storage tank and sludge store.
The solar installation is triggered to begin operating when water temperature in the collector exceeds slurry temperature by 8 C and stops as soon as the temperature differential reaches 2. 5 C.
The collector idles at about 85 C to prevent boiling.
The biogas reactor has a capacity of 215 m3 and processes 10 m3 of pig slurry daily. The minimum residence time for the slurry is 15 days in mesophilic conditions. As the slurry is pumped into the digester tank an equal amount of exhausted sludge is removed to a storage silo. Biogas obtained from the digester, collected in a gasometer, is used directly from the gas holder by a central heating boiler. This heats the biogas tank and pigsty. Biogas can also be stored in a gas tank using a compressor of less than 15 bar pressure.
