URBAN GREENHOUSE

Objective

To achieve better control of the temperature and microclimatic conditions in a moderately sized built up area comprising a spa and associated buildings and to reduce consumption of conventional energy. Payback is estimated at 4.44 years and annual energy savings 97 TOE.

Energy savings will be achieved by covering and enclosing spaces between buildings by means of a greenhouse-type construction consisting of glazed panels and transparent plastic film in a lightweight metal structure.
The project is located in Caramanico, a mountainous region of average monthly temperatures varying between 2.1C in mid-winter to 22.2C in mid-summer. Average daily sunshine hours are 3.1 in January, radiating 0.45 kWh/m2/h and 10.2 hours in July, radiating 0.64 kWh/m2/h.
Between October and April there is an average of 57 days od frost, 38 days of snow.
The urban Greenhouse project covers an area of 500 m2 and volume of 10,000 m3. It is estimated that the average annual amounts of thermal energy supplied by solar source will be +/- 300,000 kWh will be used for space heating and the remainder for ventilation during summer.
During winter some vents will be closed to allow air within the "greenhouse" to be heated by those parts of the enclosed space which are exposed tothe sun (building walls, gounds, people). The enclosed space will also be protected against wind. In summer the vents will be fully opened to provide increased ventilation, and the glazed roof will be covered to create shade, either with locally produced cane, a special netting, semi-reflective film or a more sophisticated, automatically adjustable system based in liquid crystals.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
