Objective
The project aims to demonstrate the technical and economical feasibility of a PV generator, combined with a battery storage and a Diesel fuelled back-up generator, as power supply for houseboats and barges, not connected to the grid, in areas with moderate climate. Advantages : Fuel savings, pollution and noise reduction, better battery use.
All 13 systems operate to the full satisfaction of the users. The reliability of the electricity supply is increased if the pv system is an add-on to the existing power supply. Good battery management is important (avoid low states of charge). State-of-charge analysers could be useful to this purpose in the future.
The yearly average final yield of all systems is 1.2 kWh/ (d*kWp) (min: 0.6; max 1.7) and the yearly average performance ratio is 0,46.
The cost per unit of energy is calculated to be 6.9 Ecu/kWh for the demonstration project and 3.5 Ecu/kWh for a replication.
If the pv systems are considered as add-on to existing diesel generator/battery systems the pv-electricity cost is 1.5 ECU/kWh (compared to 1.3 ECU/kWh for supplementary electricity production by diesel). The extra advantages of pv (increased reliability, comfort, noise) explain the high interest of ship owners in pv generators. Commercialisation is promoted.
13 PV/battery/Diesel systems (400 to 1200 Wp) are installed on houseboats and barges in the Netherlands. Each system meets the needs of one family; the size is determined by the projected consumption. For each system a small inverter is foreseen. The systems are not connected to the grid.
