PASSIVE SOLAR SYSTEM AND SUN BOILERS FOR HEATING AND HOT WATER SUPPLY IN DWELLINGS IN CAPELLE A/D IJSSEL

Objective

To prove that a relatively large amount of energy may be saved at a small extra cost (with little extra technical equipment) if traditional architectural principals and design are used and the future occupants of the houses are thoroughly informed of the passive application of solar energy.

The passive solar energy measures consist of the application of a closed verandah and passive collectors on the walls. The closed verandah has double glazing and adjoins (8 m2) the living-room. Passive collectors have been fitted in the wall facing south (10 m2). They consist of thin concrete slabs
(80 mm); square steel tubes have been incorporated in the surface of the slabs, for air-circulation. The concrete slabs can retain the solar heat for some hours.
The dwellings are also equipped with solar air collectors (5 m2) for domestic hot water system and storage of 150 lit. The houses are equipped with a heat recovery system from the kitchen and bathroom. The heating of the rooms is done by air warmed up by the recovered waste heat, by the solar energy of the passive collectors and of the verandah and by district heat, which is also used in the reference houses.
For the sun boilers also district heat is used as auxiliary source. Due to considerable price escalation changes of theproject were necessary. There are 11 dwellings with the following equipment:
- 3 well insulated dwellings with verandah and sunboiler;
- 2 well insulated dwellings with passive collectors and sunboilers;
- 6 well insulated dwellings with sunboilers only.
The last 6 dwellings are used as reference dwellings. The funding of the project by the Commission was reduced.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
