Objetivo
The project aims to demonstrate that by using solar collectors with reflectors, one can heat heavy fuel oils.
This project is realised in a deposit for heavy fuels with huge storage tanks, near Madrid.
Other objectives are :
- to eliminate the present conventional heating system;
- to reduce the ambient pollution in this urban area of Madrid;
- to reduce the fire risks due to the tion elimination of the conventional heating system;
- to demonstrate the technico-economical validity of the application.
The project is realized in a deposit with huge storage tanks for heavy oil. The plant is near to Madrid, and serves as a local buffer storage to compensate the fluctuations in the annual energy needs. Due to the absence of a refinary, one cannot make use of heating fuels with a low commercial value.
This heavy oil must be heated at 45-50 deg. C to reduce the viscosity to acceptable levels. The solar system is composed of 1380 m2 of collectors, to heat 3 storage tanks (11000 m3 and two of 2000 m3), each containing a different type of heavy oil. For this reason, 3 identical independent subsystems are built (only the dimensioning is different).
The collectors (12 x 2.5 m each) are installed according a east-west axis, in 2 levels the lower collector inclined at 60 deg. and the upper collector vertically. Reflective pannels are added on the ground and above to increase the amount of solar radiation on the collector surface. At the same time these reflectors protect the collectors to hail, snow... The first system consists of 30 collectors (total 900 m2) with a storage tank of 11000 m2 and a smaller so-called "service" tank of 5000 m3.
Each of the other two systems is composed of 240 m2 collectors with storage tank of 2000 m3 and a "service" tank of 1000 m3.
The operation of the solar system is as follows :
A circulation pump takes the oil from the large storage tank, pumps it through the collectors (to heat directly heavy oil) to the "service" tank. In case of excess of heat from the collectors, the oil is returned to the large storage tank which functions then as heat storage.
An auxiliary electrical heater (326 kW and 2 x 90 kW) is foreseen in case of emergency. This heater is then used at night time at low electricity tariffs.
