Objective
-effectively demonstrate the potential of weather canopy structures as an application for novel photovoltaic generators through the installation of a 107 kWp PViB generator;
- set new standards for the design and architectural integration of multi-functional building integrated projects;
- demonstrate high system yield, reliability and low balance of system costs, particularly through the use of AC-modules;
- develop and apply new methods for the assessment of AC module generators;
- demonstrate the cost an environmental benefit of large PV systems;
- provide extensive design an operating data for wide dissemination to public and professional audiences;
- open direct and indirect opportunities for EU companies in this rapidly developing world market.
The PV array will be integrated into an exhibition pavilion at the Earth Centre (a ?100 million visitor attraction project based on the theme of sustainable Development) . It will produce approximatively 30% of the building annual electrical demand.
The project will produce the biggest new-build building integrated PV array in the UK - a 107 kWp systems installed into a weather canopy structure. It will be the largest system based on a flat roofed building, in Europe, and will present a new design template for such elements. The PV array will have three primary functions which will be tested under the auspices of the project : clean electricity production, effective weather cover and sun-screening. The elegance and accessibility of the structure enables the use of higher efficiency and safe Moule Integrated Converters (MIC's). The use of MIC has not been attempted on the UK grid network and so it will provide a good demonstration of how this can be achieved. It is expected that the use of MICs will demonstrate improved yield and reliability as well as reduced capital expenditure (and therefore electricity costs), safer installation and operation. As a result of the size of the project, the programme of requirements drawn up from the tendering process can be expected to deliver further optimization of the inverter systems. This will yield valuable results for further development and introduction of PV technology in Europe.
2. The technology context for this project is the design development of novel photovoltaic integrated building systems.
3. The cost of existing photovoltaic systems prevents them from entering energy markets commercially. Their application in buildings presents them into a new market in which they will have a greater chance of success in the short to mid term.
4. the project will also assess
- the degree of sun-screening and light level under the canopy during key climatic conditions
- the T? profile of the inverter units, and relate this to their reliability
- the integration of a multi-kW AC module generator on the regional electricity supply grid and the site network,
including investigation of the inter-relationship with on-site wind turbine generation capacity.
