SOLAR ENERGY FOR APPARTMENT BUILDINGS

Objetivo

To show how passive and active solar energy can be economically integrated into three low cost appartment buildings. Trombe walls and conservatories are used to maximise the space heating afforded by solar energy, whilst 131 flat plate collectors will supply domestic hot water and space heating. Energy production is expected to be 5 TOE/yr; payback 16 years.

The importance of this project lies in the fact that economical solar energy systems will be demonstrated on low cost housing.
Each building will be insulated to beyond local building regulation requirements, with high density polystyrene and glasswool. Double glazing and night shutters will reduce the coefficient of heat conduction to 2.6 W/(deg.C. m2). The flat plate solar collectors, placed on the south facing roof will replace the conventional roofing and provide DHW for 31 appartments as well as some space heating depending upon the season. South facing walls will act as mass walls (TROMBE) which will provide space heating in Winter or be ventilated to the outside in Summer. Conservatories will also collect solar energy for space heating.
