Objective
To demonstrate the use of active solar energy in a Spa complex to provide hot water, heat a swimming pool and mud. The expected heat output is 720 MWh per year.
The EC project is part of a larger project which will include the construction of a Spa complex for 300 people, comprising a thermal centre, hotel, sports facilities, commercial centre, laundry, mud preparation centre and solar building. The latter building is financed by the EC and it is here, on 1000 m2 of solar roofing that the energy will be collected. Inside the building will be housed, the containers in which mud is heated and stored, heat exchangers, a conventional heating system, auxiliary heating equipment and the laundry. All control and monitoring equipment will be installed in this building. The solar roof will be constructed as a sandwich of expanded polyurethane between sheets of steel. The exterior surface will be black anodised aluminium supporting copper tubing through which water is to be pumped. Heat extracted by the water will be transferred to the following end uses, listed in order of priority: production of hot water for the baths and hotel
heating of the mud
pre-heating of the laundry water
integration into the floor central heating.
Due to the intermittant nature of the heat source and the large quantities of water required, six tanks, each containing 10 000 lit of water, will be used for short term heat storage.
