Objetivo
The project aims to demonstrate the energy saving potential through the use of integrated passive solar design and daylighting features in a school building, which has been planned primarily to meet the educational needs of children in their development from the ages of five to twelve years. The south-facing sloping roofs incorporate double glazed panels, linked with highly insulated roof space voids acting as solar collectors.
Fresh air is drawn into the voids under control, heated by solar action and blended with re-circulated warm air in the heating system. A further benefit is the provision of ventilation which reduces the need for uncontrolled window opening.
The fenestration and form of the school have been carefully designed to optimise natural daylighting, both enhancing the interior environment and reducing artificial lighting costs.
The green Park Combined School is a single storey combined junior school, built around a courtyard, of floor area 1400 m2. The teaching areas are well daylight throughout, to minimise the use of artificial lighting.
The "solar" systems consists of five glazed roof space collectors which are designed to preheat the intake to the air heating system, and thereby cut auxiliary heating demand. The window to wall ratio is similar on all facades, but the building is to be oriented so that the collectors face 20 deg. east of south.
The roof space collectors used for pre-heating of fresh air-intake are formed within 35 degree pitched roof spaces, the south inclines of which are partially glazed with walled polycarbonate.
A proportion of the pre-heated fresh air will be mixed with recirculated air and heated to the required temperature within each heating zone. Exhaust air will be drawn out from the spaces requiring the highest rates of ventilation and passed out via a heat exchange.
The system is integral with the school's heating system and is designed to achieve acceptable comfort conditions throughout the heating season.
Summer overheating of the roof spaces will be accepted because the roofs are isolatable and well insulated from the teaching spaces. As protection to the fabric, the roofs will be mechanically ventilated at an adjustable defined air temperature.
