Objective
To demonstrate the reliability, easy maintenance and cost effectiveness of a pv system for railway signals and safety systems.
On the Cecina-Saline di Volterra railway line a new safety system is installed.
Three 4 kWp PV systems now supply the electric power for an interlock relay system (ACEI), which needs an uninterruptable power supply (UPS).
The ACEI system assures by automatic interlocks that only one train can run in a given tract.
The load requirements are now:
150 V ac, 50 Hz, for the whole system, by inverter, 600 VA.
Daily consumption is of the order of 7 kWh per system.
Nr.subsystems : 3
Power subsys. : 4032 kWp
Total power : 12.1 kWp
Backup : grid
Nr. of modules : 3 x 84 = 252
Module descrip. : ITALSOLAR, 36 MS/CE, 48 Wp, monocrystalline, glass cover and Tedlar back.
Connection : 12 in series (144 V), seven parallel, series connected strings. One string permanently and directly coupled to the battery, the six other strings through two charge controllers.
Support: on racks (zinced iron), in three different places along the railroad, 55 deg. from horizontal.
Max.pwr.trcker : none
Chrg.controller : manufacturer: SEI, mod. SCR, designed for higher reliability
Battery : FIAMM (lead acid), model 2SLA300 MONOLITE, sealed, with recombination valves. Maintenance free.
Batt.(V) : 144
Capacity :
Batt. (Ah) : 300 (100h) for each sub-system
Batt. (kWh) : 43 (for each subsystem)
Inverter : Two dc/ac inverter, type S.E.I sine wave, pulse width modulation, 120 kHz. (One in operation, one in standby, entering in function within 10 ms after output voltage of the first inverter drops by more than 10%).
Inv. in (V) : 144 V
Inv. out(V) : 150 V
Inv. power(kW) : 0.6
Load descript. : Two DC/AC inverters, 144 V dc to 150 V ac, 50 Hz,6 00 VA each. Daily consumption is of the order of 7 kWh per system.
Monitoring : At the "Ponte Ginori" subsystem: irradiance
(Kipp & Zonen), temperature, currents, voltages, ecc. (about 16 data) are measured and stored as hourly averages on the hard disk of a personal computer. The data are collected every two month on a floppy disk for further processing.
