Objective
To demonstrate, that pv power is an economic means to supply electricity for pipeline corrosion protection systems.
By using pv power, the best place for the connection of the corrosion protection system to the pipeline can be chosen according to the measured soil potential.
Changes of the soil potential are continuously monitored at fixed, critical places; also these stations are pv powered.
All 62 systems are now installed and operating. Users are very satisfied.
PV systems of this type are now sold on a commercial basis. By this project a new market for pv generators was opened.
The cost of the electric energy is about 11 Ecu/kWh and hence below the electricity cost for grid connected systems in the isolated sites.
PV power generators for the cathodic corrosion protection of pipelines prove to be more economic than grid powered units, if the energy consumption is small (50 to 200 kWh per year) and the distance from the grid is larger than 200 to 800 meters.
By this project modular units, (PROSET 39, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 1400 and 3400 Wp) are developed. The 3400 Wp system is a mobile one and can be used for the compensation of ac currents (30 A at 30 V) as well.
The galvanic corrosion protection (by magnesia anodes) is no longer recommended.
Furthermore standardized measurement pillars, EPS (energy pillar system) (140 x 140 mm square, up to 6 m of length) with integrated, vandalism prove pv modules (13 Wp) on three sides are used as power supply for the measurement of the corrosion potential and for the data transmission through the pipeline itself.
Nr. subsystems : about 36 (for corrosion protection), about 26 (for measurements)
Power subsys. : 3400, 1800, 1440, 636,3 x 424, 3 x 212 Wp + about 45 x less than 100 Wp.
Total power : about 13 500 Wp.

and R & S (RDG48) and BP SOLAR (BP585).
Connection : corrosion protection systems : one to four in parallel (12 V), measurements systems : three parallel (12 V)
Support : on racks or on high poles (for the kW systems) or on the poles (for the measurement stations).
Max pwr. trcker : none
Chrg. controler : SEL, type CDC 125
Battery : VARTA lead acid batteries and Hagen, Sonnenschein, Sunlight.
Capacity :
Batt. (Ah) : up to 600 Ah (for PROSETs), 100 Ah (for EPS)
Inverter : none
Load descrpt. : pulse controled dc/dc converter with possibility to adjust the output current, sothat on the most critical point the necessary protection potential is warranted.
Monitoring : The 1440 Wp system Hengstlage/Oldenburg has complete analytical monitoring.
