SOLAR ENERGY INSTALLATION FOR THE SWIMMING POOL "DE THERMEN" AT ALPHEN AAN DEN RIJN (NEDERLAND)

Objective

This project demonstrates the use of solar heat in an indoor swimming pool in the Netherlands. The innovation aspect is the use of unglazed collectors, type FAFCO with direct flow. The pannels are mounted on the roof at 45 and 60.

collectors at 60 107 m2. Estimated energy savings 33 TOE/y.
The results of the monitored seasons 1983 and 84 show following results:
Monitoring period: 01.04.-30.10.83 01.04-31.10.84
Energy collected: 282 kwh/m2 collector 205 kwh
System efficiency: 38% 30%
Solar fraction for heating the
pool's water: 60% 49%
Average wind speed: 5.6 m/s 5.7 m/s
Pool's temperature: 26 - 28.5 c 27 - 28.5 c
The calculation by FAFCO USA was much more optimistic than the actual results. For European weather conditions the achieved results nevertheless can be considered as satisfactory, especially if one considers the high wind speed in Holland.
The collector tilted at 60 are mounted directly on the roof. The back is thus protected against the wind. The overall thermal output of this collector field is better than the one at 45 on the roof. The latter ismuch more exposed to the wind. The optimal tilt a maximal radiation during summer in Holland would be around 30.
The variation of the efficiency curve in function of the wind speed could be analized at this installation.
Solar heated indoor facility comprising 4 pools of a total water surface of 612 m2. The solar plant consists of a total surface of 578 m2 of unglazed polypropylene (FAFCO) absorbers installated on the roof of the building: a section of 471 m2 with and inclination angle of 45 and another section of 107 m2 at 60.
Solar energy used between March and mid October.
The solar plant is in operation Since August 1980 without any problems. The monitoring equipment has been purchased and installed in autumn '82 and winter '82/83. After some trouble with the main flow meter, the whole monitoring system was put into operation beginning of April 1983. No maintenance cost did arise up to the end of 1984.
