Demonstration of Robinson type solar absorbers on an outdoor swimming pool. Use of a pool cover. Energy savings 10.3 TOE/yr.
During the 1982 season which was the first fully solar heated season from 1 May till September 45400 visitors came for swimming compared to 34600 in 1981, e.G. An increase of 31%. The absorbers were in operation for 781 hours. The back up heating with gas was occasionally in operation only during the first 3 weeks in the season, for a few days end of May middle of June and begin of September. From middle of May on till end of the saison the average water temperature was between 23 deg. C and 27 deg. C. The gas consumption in 1982 was 3520m3 which is only 11.3% of above mentioned average consumption of 39825m2 in 1978/79/80. It must be the pointed out that this saving in gas must be attributed to the effects of the pool cover and of the absorbers. In the following years 83 and 84, the monitored performance of the solar installation is very good for Dutch climat. The management of the pool is entirely satisfied with the solar installation and the pool cover. On behalf of the Dutch government, the monitoring is going on, but will not be integrated in the CE-report.

The project is a successful example of how to heat and manage an open air swimming pool.
The simple payback calculation solar input transformed in gas volume equivalent does not reflect the overall savings due to the fact, that the pool's temperature is varying according to the weather conditions and visitors and requires no auxiliary heating. In fact the trust is saving 30 000 m3 gas per season. The payback period is 7 years/
The swimming pool "De Baan" is one of the few out-door swimming facilities in Holland. It has been built and is now being exploited by the Stichting Zwembad Gouderak", a private initiative of the inhabitants of Gouderak (total number 2800) in 1971, originally heated by natural gas. (average consumption over the years 1978/79/80 was 39,825m3 of gas at a minimum water temperature of 22c).
The pool measures 16 x 43m totalling 688m2. A removable pool cover has been installed in April 1981 and the solar plant having been installed in Summer is in operation since August 1981. It totals 96 absorbers of the Robinson's type, 3.6m2 each, resulting in a total absorber surface of 345m2, which is 50% of the pool's water surface. Solar overcost Hfl. 82,286 or 32,500 ECU.
The monitoring is based on handfilled forms. The readings were taken three times per day. The data analysis showed, that this kind of monitoring gave enough information as to performance and efficiency of the plant.
The pool has been reopened on 7 May 1983. As the repair which the gas heating system would require is very expensive, it has been decided to take out of service definitely this system and to heat only with solar.
