COMBINED COMBUSTION OF RDF AND COAL IN LARGE UTILITY BOILERS

Objectif

The aim of the Project is to demonstrate the technology of burning RDF and coal in coal-fired utility boilers by means of minor modifications to the fuel feeding system and with no problems as regards the effects on the environment and the operating conditions of the boiler and its equipment. Another target is to obtain useful full scale information on the possibility of applying this particular technology, in order to assess its technical, economic and operating viability.
Finally it is advisable that all the partners of this project can gain the necessary experience to promote this technology in view of its commercial exploitation in the world energy market.

The co-firing technique of coal and RDF in coal-fired boilers is based on the principle of replacing a fraction of the main fuel with fuel derived from the processing of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste).
This technology makes it possible to utilize existing conventional plants (utility boilers), also if with some minor plant modifications, in particular to the fuel feeding system, to produce energy from renewable resources, such as fuels derived from solid waste.
Also with a limited thermal input from RDF, it is possible to burn significant amounts of this fuel. A 320 MWe unit can accept about 20 t/h of RDF, when the thermal input is 10%. The Thermo-fluid-dynamic conditions inside the combustion chamber of the boiler are suitable for favoring a sound combustion, especially as regards the production of PCDD and PCDF, as a consequence of the residence time, turbulence and temperature.
The thermodynamic steam conditions of a fossil fuelled boiler are much higher than in a dedicated waste-to-energy plant, such as a traditional incinerator, so that the overall energy conversion efficiency is higher, because in practice the original boiler efficiency is slighthly affected by addition of RDF.
From the economic point of view of the utility, co-firing of coal and RDF is interesting, because it is possible to replace significant quantities of fossil fuel with a lower cost fuel. RDF utilization is to be considered as a part of the framework of the overall MSW disposal system, that takes into account the possibility of suitable treating the waste as received from the collection service in order to separate the inert metal fraction, the organic fraction to implement composting process and the light and high energy content fraction, referred to as RDF, to be utilized in energy conversion processes.
Co-firing poses some unavoidable cons well, like waterwall and superheater corrosion phenomena, possible fouling and slagging processes in the upper part of the furnace, which must be suitably investigated, together with the emission of pollutants and possible change of ash and slag characteristics.

Programme(s)
