COAL WASTE COMBUSTION IN A F B C FOR POWER GENERATION

Objective

Coal Waste Combustion in atmospheric fluidized bed boiler with a 120 T/h steam or 25 MWe size.
Those wastes having an ash content up to 77%. The wastes are coming either one line from a coal washery or can be removed from an existing coal pile.
The wastes are just submitted to a crushing and a screening in order to obtain a grain size lower than 8 mm and an humidity not exceeding 14%.
The main objectives of the project :
a) production of energy from a zero value fuel,
b) production of stable ashes with commercial value.
During the running periods with the contractual fuel, it has been noted that the design conditions have been met for the steam production as well as for the installation different parameters.
During the design of this boiler, it has been guaranteed that at the nominal capacity of the boiler (120 T/h), with the basic fuel, the emission at the outlet of the chimney would be limited to the measures defined in the Royal Order of August 18, 1986 completed with the one dated November 17th, 1987 :
- Dust content : < 50 mg/NM3 wet
- NOx content : < 800 mg/Nm3 wet
- SO2 content : < 1200 mg/m3 wet
These values being determined on gases at 6% of O2. Some tests performed at nominal capacity of the boiler with 100% waste coal show the following values :
- Dust content : < 50 mg/Nm3 wet 6% O2
- Nox content : < 500 mg/Nm3 wet 6% O2
- SO2 content around 3000 mg/m3 without desulfurisation,
< 800 mg/Nm3 wet 6% O2 with limestone injection in the fuel for desulfurisation.
FUTURE ACTIVITIES :
Following the decision of the General Management of NV. Mijnen and Electrabel. The fluidised boiler was shut down on 15 May 1996 in order to carry out a general evaluation of the project. On July 26, 1996 a final decision was taken to stop the project. On November 13, 1996 the complete installation was taken out of service and has been at a complete standstill until now.
Design, construction and erection of a fluidized bed boiler burning coal wastes in agreement with the future EEC regulations for environment protection. Conceive a post-combustion and ash cooling device not using mechanical extraction systems in the hot portion.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
