The Development of a Single Pan-European Freeze/Thaw Test for the Clay Paver Standard

Objective

The objective of the project submitted under the SMT Dedicated Call for Proposals is to develop a single test method for assessing the durability of clay pavers when subjected to cycles of freezing and thawing whilst in a saturated condition, such as is experienced in many parts of Europe during the winter season. The single test method is required by CEN/TC/178 to replace the four existing national test methods included in the draft paver standards prEN1344 and 1345. These four methods differ in several important respects and the aim of the programme will be to identify the best features of each method and to incorporate them into a draft single method. To do this a selection of clay pavers will be tested by each method and the results used to assess their relative performances. This information, together with existing knowledge will be used by the participants in the project to design a draft single method. This method will then be assessed by each laboratory using the same range of pavers previously tested. If necessary some details of the method may be modified and the method re-examined. The final outcome will be an agreed single test method which will be presented to CEN/TC/178 for inclusion in the European Standards for Clay Pavers.
