Mechanical Tests for Advanced Technical Ceramics

Objective

This proposal is in reponse to the invitation to tender for Project 1 in the Second Dedicated Call of the SMT Programme. It brings together a pan European consortium of specialised institutional expertise to address the four tasks specified, as follows:
Task 1: Surface roughness: An interlaboratory
study, possibly extended to sodding nations, will be initiated to evaluate the appropriateness of the wording in CEN ENV(ACT) 621-4. A range of advanced technical ceramic (ATC) surface types will be employed. Initially these will be fully characterised, and then selected appropriate ones will be issued to participants. Results will be analysed and appropriate conclusions drawn about the restricted practice proposed in the ENV . Links to relevant surface standards committees ensure good practice in keeping with current metrological requirements and thinking.
Task 2 Oxidation: A research group will be set up
to investigate experimental control requirements to achieve homogeneity and reproducibility of oxidation in various furnacing systems, addressing control parameters, such as furnace geometry, mounting and support of test-pieces, gas flow and shielding effects, etc., considered critical to the establishment of formal wording in a standard. Consistency of result will be the key result sought. A variety of relevant ATCs will be employed.
Task 3: Elastic moduli:
A research group with the required spectrum of facilities will review and compare methods in the ENV using a variety of ATC materials in a range of appropriate geometries. An error analysis of each method will be made. An interlaboratory comparison will then be conducted to provide evidence of the acceptability of reproducibility and equivalence of the proposed methods. The research group will also conduct an evaluation of the methods extended where possible to elevated temperatures to provide guidance for further standards drafting.
Task 4: Hardness: A research group will first evaluate ceramic hardness reference blocks from two sources and decide their applicability to the practice defined in the ENV. It will then examine the general applicability of the standard to a wide range of ATCs in order to define its scope in materials terms. An interlaboratory study will be organised and analysed to verify that the practices proposed have acceptable reproducibility In parallel, two partners with the relevant specialised equipment will also evaluate depth-sensinq hardness on the same reference blocks to provide a comparison of methods and to evaluate prospects for future standardisation of this method for hard materials.
Progress of and output from the project will be channelled directly CEN TC184 to guide the formulation and evaluation of proposed standards.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
