Development of standard measurement methods for luminous characterization of sea signals

Objectif

Background

Actually the unavailability of standards and
recommendations which could clarify the measurement
methods needed for the characterisation of luminous
emission distribution of sea signal beacons, implies that
the related features of those devices depends on the
"point of view" of each manufacturer. The solution to
this problem involve to avoid the technical obstacles for
satisfactory operation of trade through the development
of standard measurement techniques that would assure
reliable results. Furthermore, it will contribute to
increase the security of the maritime navigation,
improving the quality in visual aids to navigation and
favouring the trade and human safety.

Objective

The main objective of this project is to develop a robust
and reliable measurement procedure to characterise the
luminous intensity emission of certain sort of beacons
used for sea signalling. In particular the project is
oriented to determine the range and accuracy of the
following parameters:
a) Optimal distance in the range 10 - 40 m (usual
laboratory dimensions) to allow reliable extrapolation of
measurement data for very large distances (over 10 Km).
b) Angular range and measuring interval to improve
accuracy and reliability of measurements.
c) Number of emission planes to be considered for a
complete characterisation of each kind of beacon.

Work programme

To achieve these objectives the project counts with a
consortium comprised of five partners: four photometry
laboratories and a beacons manufacturing company. To
elaborate this procedure first it will be compiled worldwide technical information related to the known
measurement methods. The samples provided by the
industrial partner will be characterised in different
laboratories (indoor and outdoor measurements) by all
research partners applying different variants of the
measurement procedure elaborated at the project
beginning. The final results will be elaborated in form
of a standard proposal to be submitted to CEN (European
Committee of normalisation) and IALA(International
Association of Lighthouses Authorities)

State of Progress

The development of the DESMEMLUCSS project is proceeding
according to plan. The bibliographic compilation has been
finished and after the celebration of the schedule
meetings it's been studied and accorded a draft
measurement procedure to be accomplish by all partners in
order to guarantee repeatability. The first laboratory
has successfully finished its measurement term applying
the stated measurement procedure to the testing of two
different kind of beacons (directional and horizon), a
complete report on laboratory results its been
elaborated. Actually its been carrying the outdoor
measurements term.
All the results on these measurement term would be
compared between all the laboratories involved in order
to elaborate a preliminary standard proposal.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
