New Tests Methods for Threaded Fasteners

Objectif

Background

The mechanical characteristics of steel and alloy steel
bolt and screw industry products are defined by the EN
20898-1 and EN 20898-2 European standards. The conformity
controls of the products are carried out at room
temperature (+15 C to +25 C). For the use of mechanical
fasteners at temperatures inferior or superior to the
room temperature, the user must make sure that the
mechanical properties remain appropriate for the intended
use conditions. It would be largely inconceivable for the
user to undertake validation tests of screw and bolt
mechanical characteristics, because these would increase
costs and delivery terms constraints for standard bolt
and screw industry products. The international
standardisation organisation of fasteners has never
carried out work on this subject. As is the case for
European standards, the ISO standard gives mechanical
characteristics of fasteners at room temperature only. In
comparison with scientific studies about the mechanical
performance of steel at low or high temperatures,
specific research on threaded fasteners is rare.

Objectives

The originality of this project is to propose new, cheap
and useful test methods for manufacturers of fasteners,
which will not require any laboratory development.
At the end of this research, the industrial partners will
be able actively to participate in the revision of EN
20898-1 and EN 20898-2 standards. Finally, the
development of new mechanical testing techniques for
small fasteners will ensure their manufacturers of a
Quality Assurance access for their products and it will
improve the safety of use of these products, particularly
in the car manufacturing industry and in the electrical
and mechanical engineering fields.

Work programme

At a first stage, the research programme will deal with
the validity of the impact tests between - 50 C and 0 C.
The experimental results obtained will be exploited in
order to evaluate the relevance of a new assessment
method for screw resilience, on the basis of the possible
correlation between this characteristic, the elastic
limit and the reduction of area. In addition to this
assessment procedure on test pieces, the research
programme will also focus on tests on finished products.
The second part of this research programme will deal with
the reliability of the loss of preload test between +
100 C and + 300 C. Based on a load testing campaign on
screws and nuts, reference data which are necessary for
the research programme will be obtained. The relationship
between the findings obtained with the new technique and
the reference findings will be determined, and the
results will be suggested as a means of monitoring screw
and nut mechanical characteristics at a high temperature.

State of progress

The different types of screws and nuts which will be used
during the programme, are now manufactured and available
for the experimental work. At this stage, impact tests
and tensile tests at low temperature have been conducted.
The design of specific devices for the new test methods
has been started.

Programme(s)
