Mutual Acceptance of Calibration certificates between EUROMET and NIST

Objective

The objective is to achieve mutual acceptance of calibration certificates from NMIs in EU and NIST, i.e. equivalence is accepted by regulatory bodies in the EU and USA based on comparisons between NMIs. Amongst other benefits, the project will meke redundant the required calibrations by NIST for European laboratories that are already traceable to a European NMI. The project has to be seen in the light of 'The new trasatlantic agenda" signed by president Clinton and the Council of Ministers.
Based on the database of EUROMET comparison-projects, comparisons performed under BCR and SMT as well as available results for comparisons between NIST and EUROMET memebers, a scheme is to be worked out that allows the results of these comparisons to be used directly in support of trade between EU and USA.The project will make full use of the comparisons arranged by BIMP and will work in accordance with the foreseen development of multiregional agreements. The work sonsists of the following phases :
- Analysis and preparation
- The prototype comparison and declaration of equivalence
- Second dialogue with regulatory bodies and case studies
- Finalising and reporting
