Monitoring the Corrosion State of Glass Objects by Optimized Micro-Computerized X-Ray-Tomography

Objective

Background During their lifetime glass objects may have experienced different environmental conditions (in soil, water, polluted or humid air etc.). The corrosion process changes the surface structure of sensitive glasses. Based on leaching processes a water-rich gel layer with microcracks, covered by a crust of corrosion products and dirt is built up. The actual preservation state of a particular glass object reflects all its history and influences its future behaviour. Any effective conservation concept for glass objects has to be based on the knowledge about its actual corrosion state. Recognized methods for the analysis of corroded glass, like SEM-EDX or XPS are destructive, as they require embedding in a polymer to prepare cross-sections or sputtering to obtain depth-profiles. Operating in vacuum alters the water-containing gel-layer which is to be examined. Computerized X-ray Tomography (CT) is an imaging technique first developed for medical radiology. The only application of CT in the cultural heritage domain dealt with stone deterioration. Detecting the corrosion state of glass objects is feasible, in principle, by visualizing the porous structure and the water-content of the corroded layer. However, the existing equipment has to be improved and adapted for this purpose.
Objectives The aim of this project is to introduce micro- computerized X-ray Tomography (mCT) as a new non- destructive tool for glass conservation. As a result, the main objectives are: - to adapt/improve mCT equipment to analyse glass objects; - to use model glasses to calibrate mCT analysis; - to detect the state of corrosion of glass objects by mCT; - to demonstrate the potential of mCT for the improvement of restoration/conservation techniques for sensitive glasses.
Work programme In order to achieve these objectives, model glasses simulating corrosion phenomena of originals will be prepared and characterized by all available destructive methods, such as SEM-EDX or XPS. Based on these data the parameters for the new non-destructive mCT-equipment will be calibrated. Special emphasis will be given to optimize mCT to detect the layered structure of corroded original glass (archaeological objects or medieval window glass). The effectiveness of cleaning sensitive glasses with lasers will be monitored to demonstrate the potential of mCT for the evaluation of restoration/conservation measures on glass objects.
State of progress The project has just started.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
