Objectif
Background: Chemical profiling of amphetamines is an important process in the control in the International trade in these compounds. This is because the process of profiling can:
i) identify the synthetic routes which have been used to manufacture these drugs, and hence which starting materials should be controlled and /or monitored;
ii) the country or region in which the materials have been synthesised through drug intelligence processes;
iii) identify seizures which may be linked together, thus identifying drug trafficking routes. In order that the exchange of such information, and Europe and worldwide control of these drugs can be optimised, a harmonised, tested and validated method for the chemical profiling of amphetamines is required.
objective: The objective of the programme is to develop a collaboratively tested, harmonised method for the profiling of amphetamines from clandestine laboratories using gas chromatography - mass spectrometry. The system will be optimised for impurity extraction, gas chromatographic analysis, data collection and mathematical manipulation, including numerical methods of comparison. It is anticipated that the method will allow street samples containing low concentrations of amphetamine (<5% by weight) to be analysed. The method will be documented according to International Standards. Work programme Each of the partners will be involved in each stage of the work programme.
The anticipated stages in the work programme are:
i) preparation of documented standard compounds;
ii) examination of the stability of these compounds under profiling conditions;
iii) optimisation of the instrumental analysis;
iv) optimisation of drug and impurity extraction protocols
v) determination of the optimum detector system;
vi) minimisation of artefact formation;
vii) demonstration of stability of the developed system;
viii) optimisation of data handling;
ix) identification of the most common routes of amphetamine synthesis in Europe;
x) application to casework samples Each stage will be led by one of the partner laboratories. State of progress: It is anticipated that work will commence February 1st, 1999.
