Objective
The empirical core of this project is to build a Database on Industrial market shares in the European Community. A method of data collection which has already been successfully applied to the UK is to be extended to cover all the Community countries. This unique database will be applied to examine a wide range of issues relating to European industrial organisation. For the first time, this will enable the direct measurement of the concentration, diversification, vertical integration and multinationality of leading European firms. It will also enable an analysis of performance distinguishing: the influence of the nationality of ownership of firms as against geographic location, the relative influences of national versus European market dimensions; international trade as against direct investment; and other policy concerns. The proposal centres around seven research teams based in different EC countries, and includes two international conferences designed to both discuss the methodology of applying the database at an early stage, and to disseminate results.
