CONTROL OF UNCERTAIN SYSTEMS

Exploitable results

Studies have been conducted in order to: develop theories of robust control, adaptive control and model reduction; exploit the interaction between the above areas in order to develop stabilizing controls which perform well in the presence of uncertainties; develop a computational infrastructure to assess algorithms produced by different groups. A major part of the research effort has resulted in a state space theory of robustness. The concept of a stability radius (robustness measure) has been introduced and characterized for time invariant and time varying, finite and infinite dimensional linear systems. Its optimization via state feedback has been analyzed and its invariance with respect to extensions in the class of perturbations has been explored. Necessary conditions for global adaptive stabilization have been obtained. The effect of sampling has been examined and a variety of adaptive schemes for scalar systems have been developed and tested numerically. The model reduction research followed 2 distinct courses. Infinite dimensional systems were approximated via the Hankel norm, whereas for finite dimensional systems, new results were obtained via Liapunov inequalities. A great deal of the research concentrated on the cross fertilization of the 3 fields, particularly robust adaptive and robust model reduction.
