A MOLECULAR APPROACH TO NEW INORGANIC MATERIALS

Objetivo

Research concerned the synthesis and characterization of new bimetallic carbonyl clusters of the transition metals, the study of selectivity in substitution chemistry of mixed metal clusters and their heterosite reactivity, and the investigation of the eventual transformation of these molecular compounds in new inorganic materials.

Firstly, it was found that all the clusters under an electron flux undergo several types of transformation. Secondly, it was shown that bimetallic clusters do show several heterosite selective reactions in solution, and a better understanding of the factors at their origin has been obtained. It is likely that this information could be extrapolated to solid state reactivity. Techniques such as cobalt-59 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and ruthenium-99 NMR were found to be valuable tools for the study of the behaviour of these compounds in solution. Laser desorption mass spectrometry may allow precise characterization of the composition of very large cluster compounds.

A series of new bimetallic clusters have been synthesized and characterized. These include species showing a nuclearity up to 21, previously undocumentated combinations of metal atoms, new types of ligands, species with variable oxidation states and compounds which may be defined as cluster ligands or cluster acceptor molecules. Their electronic and spectroscopic behaviour have been the subject of both theoretical and experimental studies.
The different expertise of academic groups in the UK/France/Italy is required to be bought together for the success of this multidisciplinary project. This consortium will allow a unique group to be established with a critical mass, containing the necessary expertise and equipment, required for this work to be carried out. As far as we are aware, there is no other such group worldwide which would presently be in a position to tackle such problems.
At Liverpool, Analytical Electron Microscopy (AES) will be used to investigate bimetallic molecular clusters and heterometallic clusters containing interstitial atoms, eg C, N, Si, P, S etc. (prepared in Italy) as potential precursors to know and, eventually, entirely new inorganic materials and/or catalysts. The chemically-, electrochemically-, thermally-, or radiation- induced condensation products of the above precursors will also be characterized by electron or X-ray powder diffraction studies and by other surface science methods and the catalytic properties of these materials will be investigated by the Strasbourg group.
