Objective
The objective is to update the technology of bacterial bed treatment for the elimination of nitrogen, specifically in relation to temperature.
Aims of the research are as follows.
To define operational criteria for the elimination of carbon pollution together with the oxidation of nitrogen and its better elimination (nitrification and denitrification).
To study the influence of several parameters: temperature and thermic changes; natures of the beds, particularly plastics beds; reactors hydraulics and detention times; and recycling rates.
To study nitrification using microbiological methods.
The methodology involves follow up of semi -industrial pilots under different climatic conditions and monitoring campaigns on reference samples from full scale plants. The purpose is to set up a technical book containing reliable basis for the design and ideal management in order to raise the output levels required by the new EEC standards. The programme is conceived to be compatible with modelisations. Sampling methods and criteria for defining the management will be harmonized.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
