Objectif
This project uses an urban cooperation network of 45 towns and cities to step up development of telematics in line with a common consensus on suitable applications in key urban sectors. Environmental policy, leisure facilities and transport are among the areas targeted. Through city, town and regional linkages on the network, local authorities will promote urban telematics based on European good practice. Evaluation of its role as a spur to growth will facilitate agreement on how the technology can solve specific urban problems. Annual conferences will publicise the urban sector initiatives and the results of all projects relevant to them.
By providing an open co-operation network for a concerted urban development through Telematics, this project aims to accelerate the deployment of cost-effective telematics solutions responding to a common definition of the "urban demand" for telematics services and applications in urban major domains, such as i) economic regeneration and development to sustain, increase and improve employment opportunities, ii) social needs and the improvement of quality of life; iii) education and training; iv) elderly and disabled; v) healthcare; vi) libraries; vii) environment; and viii) transport.
The scope of this project covers a number of networking activities by cities, towns and regions with a view to laying the foundations of the Global Information Society as outlined by the recent G7 world conference, the Delors White Paper and the Bangemann report. Through this open network, local authorities will have access to an important forum for information exchange and expertise which will enable policy and decision makers to more effectively promote the development of new urban telematics systems and services based on knowledge and 'best practice' derived at the European level. By undertaking concerted activities on telematics applications in urban and surrounding areas and measuring the development of urban telematics and the contribution that these are making to economic and social growth, the project also seeks to establish a consensus on appropriate technological solutions to the challenges facing urban areas in Europe.
As part of this project, annual conferences covering all the application sectors of urban telematics will be organised to disseminate the current state of the art, the results of projects funded by the Telematics Applications Programme and the progress of urban areas initiatives.
