Objective
Development and test of a position measuring system for great water depths. Therefore inclination sensor systems in measuring cans are to be attached with defined distances to the riser. From these inclination measurements a central computer determines the displacement of the riser compared to the lower riser end. Energy supply and connection of data lines to and from the sensor cans are carried out as plugless inductive couplings. In addition to the position displacement for supervision purpose the spatial curve of the whole riser is determined.
Components of the system are designed and fabricated. System is ready for operation in water depths up to 2000 m with three sensor cans as tested. Extension is possible up to water depths of appr. 3000 m with more than 20 substations, which can carry different sensors and control outputs (e.g. for valve control). Solutions for water depths up to appr. 6000 m are available. Application of the system for different tasks not only riser inclination measurement is possible due to flexible modification of the components and software environment according to operator requirements.
The main object of this R & D project is to build a prototype and to test the riser inclination measuring system under real environmental and operational conditions.
These tests are necessary, because this is the only way to examine :
- how the electrical behaviour of the conductor line changes depending on diving depth. For example, the capacity is depending on the permittivity of seawater, which has to be taken into account for the data communication between the lower and the central station.
- whether the configuration of sensor cans and the inductive data coupling stand the test under real environmental conditions.
The tests are organized in laboratory tests, shallow water tests with seawater and pressure tests.
Additionally the following problems are to be investigated during this R & D project :
- optimization of the design of sensor cans and transformers
- optimization of the fluxgate configuration (magnetic compass at lower end and top station)
Handling of the system has to be clarified in addition
- especially, how the sensor cans are to be fastened to the riser. The mounting of the system to the riser joints shall not substantially influence the riser installation, it therefore will be carried out simple and fast.
In addition to the design work the software has to be overworked and partly new developed and the test programs have to be examined.
