AN ADVANCED 3D TOOL TO IMAGE COMPLEX STRUCTURES

Objetivo

The aim of the SISTRE project was to develop and implement a methodology which would enable the oil exploration industry to build and estimate 3D subsurface velocity and depth models based on seismic information recorded at the surface of the earth.
This methodology is based on a new generation time to depth conversion tool, based on seismic traveltime tomography, along with user environments for each tool designed under a complete software programming environment. The methodology takes into account the propagation in 3D of the waves and the refraction of the waves at the limits of the geological bodies.
The project has been successfully completed and an initial industrial product is in place for testing and evaluation. Up to date results seem to validate the functionality of the product but additional effort is needed to evaluate it in a complete seismic exploration case.
SISTRE had been separated into four main phases according to specification requirements, and the work effort was distributed among partners. During the course of this project and in order to remain within contract limitations (e.g. planning and budget) it was decided to omit some new items discovered in the course of the studies. It must be clearly understood that this ommitance does not influence directly the performance of the product and should not be considered crucial to its existence.
The development and implementation of the SISTRE project has met its overall objectives which were:
a) to identify the main layers of a 3D earth model,
b) to estimate the propagation velocity of the waves within these layers,
c) to position the main layers in depth in the subsurface.
At the end of this first phase, a pre-industrial product has been delivered to all partners. We now have a software tool, that fulfils most of the project aims. Extensive use of this by the industry will of course validate its usefulness.
SISTRE is a 3D macro earth model estimation package based on seismic reflection traveltime tomography. Its main phases include development of User Environment, 3D depth modeler, 3D ray tracing and 3D inversion.
The first phase dealt with the development of a user environment whose scope was to provide an interface for all SISTRE applications using up to date technologies, and also a toolbox for programming development. In the second phase of the project the ground was laid for the implementation of a 3D depth modeler based on Gocad topology. This task was a tedious one as the integration between Gocad and SISTRE proved to be very cumbersome. The following phase had a goal, the development of a 3D ray tracing application using the above mentioned topology. This part was the most difficult of all phases as it required continuous upgrading, planification and testing for accuracy. Finally, the inversion phase with a large variety of tasks has been completed with relative success. Itsgoals ranged from seismic pre-processing to a final set of quality controls of the optimized 3D model.
