Objective
Development of deep water drilling technology.
A complete study of acoustic problems associated with the various systems employed in the drillship has been undertaken and action taken at all design and construction phases to minimise interference with the acoustic systems. An analysis of data recorded on board the drillship during trials has proved that input and electrical noise are at minimal levels. An acoustic signature of the drillship has been established to act as a guide if problems arise in future.
Marine riser studies resulted in the riser flotation specification now installed on the vessel. The design of a gimballing system for the rotary table and diverter housing was performed. Initial test results were satisfactory. Further monitoring during drilling operations has confirmed the initial findings and has established operating parameters for the specified riser. Blow-out preventer controls compatible with the drillship's design operating capabilities were designed, manufactured and then commissioned aboard the drillship.
In order to achieve the optimum degree of fine manoeuvring during wellhead re-entry the automatic station keeping (ask) system and well-head re-entry side scan solar-underwater television tool have been interfaced. Successful re-entries have been made at all water depths operated and an external tv facility has been adopted as an additional aid to re-entry.
In 1974 ben odeco ltd (bol) signed a contract with scotts shipbuilding co ltd to build a dynamically positioned drillship based on an ihc design for which scotts held licence rights, but to be developed to drill in 3 000 ft of water. This drillship ("ben ocean lancer") was delivered to bol in march 1977.
To achieve the drilling system required to operate ben ocean lancer in water depths as deep as 3 000 ft (915m), bol has undertaken research and development which has included the following specific studies:
- the study of potential acoustic and associated problems
- the study of marine riser in deep water and the specification of riser flotation and related system
- the design of blow-out preventer (bop) multiplex controls
- the interfacing of the re-entry systems with dynamic positioning systems.
