Objective
The rock eval i mother rock analyser, developed jointly by ifp and fina, was designed principally for manual use in the laboratory. The success encountered by this technique has led to the construction of an automatic instrument for rapid on-site exploitation of the parameters provided by pyrolysis of the organic matter in sedimentary rocks.
The project resulted in the construction and marketing of an automatic mother rock analyser. The bases for analysing the organic sulphur and carbon were established.
Applications for this equipment are interest to :
- petroleum exploration : characterization of the petroleum potential of the rocks, the quality and the types of mother rocks and the state of evolution of the organic matter (delineation of oil zone)
- tar shales : rapid determination of the pyrolysis oil efficiency
- coals : characterization of the state of evolution and rank.
There were 4 stages to this project :
- design and construction of an appliance for automatic analysis of mother rocks,
- design of a module for analysis of the organic sulphur,
- design of a module for determination of the organic carbon,
- execution of an integrated system grouping a combination of these modules.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
