Objective
To develop a concrete gravity type platform which can be used as a support structure for offshore oil and gas production facilities in waterdepths between 300 and 400 m, in areas with severe environmental conditions and poor soil quality.
Those conditions are found in the Norwegian trench where gas deposits are found, one of which in the large Troll field in block 31. Innovative solutions are required to develop a platform concept which can stand on soft soil and resist the severe environmental conditions which occur in that area.
The results are positive; the expectations have been confirmed. Applications have been discussed with oil companies who are operating in the Norwegian trench (Troll field, Haltenbanken area).
A platform concept has been developed with the following characteristics :
- minimal forces on the foundation for obtaining sufficient foundation stability even on very weak soils.
- conventional construction methods.
- the possibility to tow the completed platform with installed top-sides in vertical position to its location.
The project consists of the following phases:
1. Conceptual design (dimensioning of the substructure).
A conceptual development study has been executed to identify design concepts and foundation principles which can be used for this situation. A conceptual design has been defined which meets this set of requirements
2. Optimisation (computer analyses and modification).
An optimisation study has been executed in order to arrive at a preliminary design which incorporates the functional requirements for the platform and which provides an economic optimum. This has been achieved after a number of trade-off's has been made. 3. Final design (structural analyses, detailing).
Global analysis and detailed analysis have been executed in order to determine the load effects in the various parts of the structure. Drawings are prepared shown thicknesses, material quantities and details of structural solution.
4. Construction planning and budgetting.
The construction process has been detailed and schedules are prepared for design and construction. The anticipated use of materials, labour and equipment as well as construction sites have been identified.
