CONCEPT FOR SUBSEA SYSTEMS IN SHALLOW WATER

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to develop a number of subsea systems which can be installed in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea or in surrounding waters for the production of hydrocarbons from economical marginal fields. The systems shall be regarded as alternatives to light weight platforms which may not be attractive of economical and environmental reasons in the deeper areas and in areas with heavy ship traffic and large ice forces.
The working groups made up from the contractors have reported on the following design results achieved.
- Environmental DTA, conditioning, criterias, and loads.
- Well data for oil and gas wells.
- Assessment and comparison of risks for platform and subsea system , ice, ship impact, fishing gerr, etc.
- Design cases and standards.
- Economic and technical review.
- Template, wellheads, and manifold.
- Protection, geometry and structure.
- Two phase flow, oil and gas condensate pipelines.
- Pipelines and control lines, overall review.
- Installation, drilling, and completion incl. tie-back.
- Tie-in, diver assisted and remote controlled.
- Proces facilities, offshore and shore based.
- Control systems, valves and actuators.
- Power supply and signal transmission.
- Operation of systems.
- Maintenace, methods, equipment, and personel.
- Risk analysis, failure mode and effect analysis.
- Preliminary economic analysis.
Each of the referenced topies are documented in seperate design reports.
A large number of known fields have not been developed due to their marginal economics. The main objective of this project is to investigate the technical and economical feasibility of marginal field development concepts based on subsea systems. Marginal fields can in general be defined as fields, whose recoverable reserves are minimal and cannot be developed economically utilizing conventional structures and processing facilities.
The definition applies in principle to two different categories of fields :
a. A peripheral marginal field allowing the produced oil/gas to be linked to an existing facility for processing or tied into existing pipelines for transportation to said facility.
b. A geographical marginal field remotely located from existing facilities or pipelines and believed to hold insufficient reserves to make conventional production methods economical.
In order to improve the economics of hydrocarbon production from marginal fields in the more shallow parts of the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and surrounding waters and in order to decrease the field size limit for economically viable field developments a review of possible development options will be carried out.
This results in the identification of a number of concepts for the subsea systems which can compete favourably with more traditional solutions.
Further it is to be expected that removal of platforms will be made compulsory in the future when an oil/gas field is abandoned. This will add to the cost of these solutions, where as subsea systems will not have this disadvantage.
Therefore, it is proposed to perform design verification for a number of alternatives. Emphasis will be placed on features requiring development or redesign beyond existing technology in order to meet the specific application.
