SEA TESTS ON RISERS FOR FLOATING PLATFORMS [PHASE 1]

Objective

The scope of this research project is to organise and carry out sea tests on instrumented risers, in order to acquire experimental data on the dynamic behaviour of operating risers suitablefor verifying the capability of the available theoretical calculation procedures of compliant structures.
oreover, aim of the project is to carry out a direct experimental verification of the conditions which cause hydroelastic vibrations induced by vortex shedding, both in the presence and absence of a second riser and the consequences which such phenomena have on the stresses and the displacements of the riser.
The project will develop and validate the calculation procedures needed to design production risers for floating systems suitable for exploitation of deep water hydrocarbon fields located in the European contiental shelf.
Development will refer mainly to :
- Instrumentations systems
- Daata acquisition and analysis procedures
- Calculation procedures
The main result of this project is the complete design of a sea test facility to perform full scale tests on risers for floating production systems.
This project constitutes phase one of a two phase project.
The phase one is dedicated to design of the experimental set up; the phase two, which will follow this one, will be dedicated to the building of the test rig, to the sea tests and to data analysis

. The basic objective is to install two instrumented risers on an already existing structure (a fixed platform) in water depth of about 75 metres. Such a structure will act as a support to the equipment required to carry out the tests.
The test rig will consist of :
- support structure
- motion simulation trolley supporting a rotating table
- tensioner
The instrumentation and data acquisition system will consist of three parts :

- instruments to measure risers' dynamic behaviour
- instruments to measure environmental conditions
- equipment for data acquisition and storage
The measurement of the risers' dynamic behaviour will be achieved by means of a sufficient number of instrumented pipe sections placed on each riser.
The signals from all the sensors will be collected by a data acquisition system based on a computer.
The data acquired during the tests will be suitable processed and compared with theoretical simulations.
On the basis of this comparison, verification of the theoretical calculation procedures will follow, in order to establish wether or not the available procedures are adequate and to produce modifications of the existing calculation procedures or to develop new ones, where appropriate.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
