TENSION LEG PLATFORM INVESTIGATION FOR WATER DEPTH RANGING BETWEEN 200 AND 1200 M

Objetivo

To investigate in detail the application of a Tension Leg Platform ( TLP) for the Mediterranean Sea and, in particular, for the Greek area. Specifically, one type of TLP for depths of 200 to 1,200 m is being considered. The execution of this study from theoretical point of view is innovative and the results will be very important for the application of such constructions in Greece as well as in other relative areas.
Final result of the project is the general techno-economical feasibility of the production, erection and multi-usage of a high technology system as a TLP for the Mediterranean Sea and in particular for the Greek area.
A preliminary design of two platforms having different payloads and for water depths up to 500 and 1200 m respectively, was carried out based on the environmental conditions of the greek area of South Kavalla, which differ greatly with those of other seas where such systems have already been installed (i. e. North Sea).
- Each unit is a semisubmersible of double symmetric type and consists of four cylindrical columns connected by four rectangular pontoons. An integrated deck, housing process equipment, auxiliaries and quarters, offers rigidity and good structural continuity to the overall structure.
- The anchoring system of the vertical type, proved as the best one , is composed of cables.
-The gravity type foundation was selected as the more effective solution.
Main emphasis in the study was given to the precise simulation of platform's hydrodynamic behaviour, including a large number of non -linearities annd only a time-domain approach was feasible.
The analysis was performed by a highly degree ALFAPI developed computational system using the F. E. M. (Finite Element Method)
. The analysis showed that due to the constraints introduced by the tethering system, the platforms show an excellent hydrodynamic performance while resonant phenomena are to a large extend avoided .
As a consequence the study proved that the TLP concept is a solution for the Mediterranean sea, specially for marginal fields, due to its low cost of installation, high hydrodynamic performance and relatively easy way of transportation.
The application of a TLP type platform is associated with risks due to its dynamic sinking and the environmental conditions in general. This study includes the prediction of TLP behaviour in the time domain with interactions between hydrodynamic and structural design, including non-linearities in a wide range of the TLP applications. The estimation of the techno-economical feasibility of the production, erection and multi-usage of a TLP in a peripheral European area is also being considered. The project is divided in the following main stages:

4. Application in South Kavalla region
5. Economic analysis according to the Greek industry capabilities 6. Project management.
