Objective
Offshore test of a production riser made of glass and carbon fibers , integrated within a steel production TLP riser. Objectives of the offshore test are the following :
- run a resistance test over a period of about 1 year on composite pipes for TLP risers.
- determine the degree of solicitations to which pipes are submitted, with the help of instrumentation existing on the platform.
The purpose of the project is to qualify high performance composite tubes made from carbon fibres, glass fibres and resin, for use as TLP production risers by seatesting composite riser joints on an injection riser on the Hutton TLP operated by CONOCO in the North Sea.
The behaviour of a composite riser on a North Sea TLP has been studied in greater depth than ever before. Required equipment for running composite risers has been established. Forgings for six steel end pieces made from special 3 1/2 NCMV steel have been fabricated.
The project consists firstly of studying the behaviour of the composite riser joints in the HUTTON TLP environment and verifying that safety factors on maximum loads and fatigue loads are acceptable. This study draws extensively on results obtained with composite tubes throughout the IFP/Aerospatiale programme of development, as well as those of the Joint Industry Programmes mounted with the support of major oil companies. Studies of running/retrieval procedures are also included in the project.
The project then includes the fabrication of three 12 m lengths of 8 1/2" internal diameter composite tubes equipped with steel end couplings. Instrumentation of the joints is also included in order to monitor the behaviour of the tubes when subjected to internal pressure and environmental effects.
The project involves the following four phases :
PHASE 1 - ENGINEERING WORKS
- Precise dimensioning of pipes, particularly of the thickness of carbon and glass-based fiber layers and of their optimal layout
- Design of the end-fittings and their connection to end connectors
- Design of equipment required for pipe installation and, where necessary, specific procedures relating to the use of composite pipes.
PHASE 2 - MANUFACTURE
- Manufacture of connector end fittings
- Manufacture of a 8 1/2" diameter chucks for pipe winding
- Manufacture of equipment for pipe installation
- Manufacture of pipes.
PHASE 3 - INSTALLATION
- Transport of pipes and transfer to the HUTTON field platform
- Assembly of the composite pipe/steel pipe riser, connection to the underwater template and tensioning.
PHASE 4 - SEA TEST
- Periodical monitoring operations and internal pressurization of pipes
- Analysis of solicitations affecting the riser by means of instrumentation existing on the Hutton platform
- Riser removal works, should a failure occur, and expert apraisal.
