DOWNTIME ANALYSIS FOR MARGINAL FIELD PRODUCTION SYSTEMS [PHASE 2]

Objetivo

'DAMPS', Downtime Analysis for Marginal Field Production Systems, Phase 1 (Cct TH./03258/87) developed a system which analyses and predicts the downtime of offshore marginal fields operated via various types of floating production systems. The emphasis is on a practical approach. Environmental downtime is a critical cause of offshore production downtime. In order to bring DAMPS to the stage where it could be of practical use to an operator, model testing relative to environmental conditions was considered essential. The Scope of Work, Damps Phase 2, involved a development of Phase 1 incorporating actual model testing in 2D and 3D wave tanks, by The Danish Hydraulic Institute/Danish Maritime Institute and University College Cork Hydraulics and Maritime Research Laboratory, to assist in tuning the environmental downtime software subroutine one step further. Motion analysis information is utilised for various configurations as previously inputted into the software Knowledge Data Bases.
Model test results have been gathered and inputted into the numerical simulator. Information available from the Project Technical Director.
The project incorporated the following tasks:
- Collation of all relevant information from DAMPS, Phase 1, and from the partners involved in Phase 2,
- Specifications of the sea states to be modelled in 2D and 3D,
- Specification of a comprehensive and representative range of marginal field configurations as subjects for the model testing programme,
- Identification, through DAMPS, Phase 1, of a prioritised list of system components for the various marginal field configurations for subsequent model testing,
- Manufacture and instrumenting of the models,
- Computation of Response Amplitude Operators (RAO's) for the components and verification of these parameters in the wave tanks,
- Sensitivity tests on the components using various sea states with group effects, storm events and component failure,
- Component/model modification and reanalysis/remodelling,
- Optimisation of the DAMPS package.
Preliminary 2D testing was carried out by HMRL to identify basic response characteristics and critical motions. DOL progressed these studies into the 3D domain, modelling 3D random sea states and multi-directional response modes. DOL also carried out comparative 2D tests to facilitate HMRL's studies on the significance and accuracy of the 2D tests. EOLAS managed the project phases outlined above and following to ensure ease of interaction between the partners and to assist in the development of an efficient product. The project examined representative marginal field production systems considered in the initial phase of DAMPS as well as modified systems determined as Phase 2 progressed. The model testing routine, in a sense, forms an extra subroutine within the software suite of Phase 1. The DAMPS software suite contains information essential to the model testing phase of marginal field developments. As such, the DAMPS data base provides means of optimising model testing work programmes by identifying specifically critical components for investigation. A reciprocal arrangement exists allowing the DAMPS data base to be updated and augmented by results from test data. Test results are fed into the software data base to provide all available data for any system being examined.
