Objective
To develop and commercialise the Exploweld/Hotforge explosive one-shot welding technique for pipelines by perfecting the welding technology to the point of good repeatability, qualifying the welding procedures to Oil Industry and regulatory body standards, developing operational equipment and preparing operating procedures for application of the welding procedure to variously; 'J' laying of flowlines and tie-backs for subsea production systems with particular attention to special alloys pipe, overland remote location pipe construction, subsea installation, tie-ins and repair of pipe.
Innovation in the use of explosive welding technology to the specific demands of hydrocarbons transportation pipelines construction subsea, offshore, overland. Innovation will be realised in the commercial development of new one shot pipeline welding procedures, high energy absorbent explosion proof clamps and sophisticated explosion sound proofing equipment.
A satisfactory clamping system with a good life is designed and tested. A vacuum box has been shown to be an effective sound reducer. A set of procedures for "J" laying from the back of a supply boat or d.s.v. has been prepared. A successful demonstration for major oil company engineers is completed.
Unfortunately a continuous series of trial welds both in vacuum and open air only underlined the mercurial nature of the technique and even under tightly controlled experimental conditions the procedure resulted in an unacceptable failure rate.
Following a technical audit by an E.C. representative the company voluntarily abandoned the project.
The project essence is contained in three major phases :
- Qualification to industry standards of the explosive welding procedure
- Development of field equipment
- Establishment of operating procedures.
Peripheral to this is :
- Essential welding technique development
- Marketing combined with field trials and demonstrations
and controlling and progressing the project will be :
- Project Management Team.
Thus the major phases of the project may be defined :
QUALIFICATION : The exercise to qualify to Oil Industry, Det Norske Veritas and Lloyds standards the explosive one shot welding procedure for hydrocarbon pipelines in three size ranges, 2"-8", 8" -20", 20"-40" for pipe material including Duplex (SEC 2205) X52, X52 Q & T, X70, X65, X60 for application subsea, offshore and overland.
DEVELOPMENT OF FIELD EQUIPMENT : Design, development and manufacture of high energy absorbing clamps, sound proofing equipment, inspection tools, offshore 'J' lay frames and onshore handling frames.
OPERATING PROCEDURES : Drafting of procedures for the application of the explosive one shot pipe welding procedure to pipelines overland, offshore 'J' lay, subsea tie-in and repair.
