DEVELOPMENT OF GUIDELINE FOR THE DESIGN OF THE FREE SPANNING PIPELINES

Objetivo

To establish an internationally recognized Project Guideline for the evaluation of free spans in offshore pipeline system, both in design and maintenance phase, with particular attention to hydroelastic phenomena caused by environmental actions.
An experimental project data base was obtained describing free span behaviour created by incident flow conditions ranging from pure steady current to pure waves and covering the mixed flow cases.
A simplified procedure for pipeline free span design was set up, verifying its efficiency with respect to more comprehensive models, developed on purpose.
Such a procedure is part of the Guideline part 2.
The first part of the Guideline contains general principles for assessing free spans.
The Guideline is meant to be a working tool for all parties involved in marine pipeline design, construction and operation as well as for authorities, governmental bodies and certifying agencies dealing with the approval of marine pipeline projects.
Moreover the Guideline is certified by a worldwide recognized certifying body, dealing with submarine pipeline systems engineering, as Det Norske Veritas, danish branch.
Five project phases were envisaged :
- the most suitable design methodologies were identified, in order to cover the most common scenarios encountered in the offshore practice; attention was also paid to less common cases, and supporting documentation was developed to make it possible to safety analyze and develop methods which are not directly treated.
The Guideline structure was established :
* the first part, providing guidance on methods and criteria for free span evaluation in order to define the principle to be applied in the various aspects of the design
* the second part, presenting calculation and verification procedures for free span evaluation, respecting the principle of Part 1.
- the experimental data available to the contractors, coming from past project such as SVS and DHI model tests, regarding the dynamic behaviour of free spans under tbe effects of hydroelastic loading, were brought together, reviewed and organized in a consistent data base.
The data were re-analyzed establishing common parameters and verifying some evidences.
A project data base was set up on the basis of the former, choosing the most reliable sets of data. In addition the most suitable models to simulate free span dynamic behaviour were drafted, and the still existing uncertainties were pointed out.
- a series of computer programs were developed implementing the most recent models, simulating experimental evidence reported by data analysis and exploiting the project data base.
These programs will be used to check the validity of the concepts and procedures presented in the Guideline.
The Guideline is actually being drafted, according to the format established previously.
- further analysis were performed to deepen the experimental items still uncertain and to upgrade the numerical models performance.
- Det Norske Veritas, danish branch, acting as subcontractor, performed the review and certification of project activities since the beginning, in order to forward suggestions and particular requirements at the earliest stage of the project. No major problems in the project development were evidenced by DnV.
