SURFACE-INDEPENDENT UNDERWATER ENERGY SUPPLY SYSTEM-DIESEL ENGINE WITH CLOSED GAS CYCLE

Objetivo

The closed-circuit diesel engine using argon as cycle medium was developed under the completed project TH. /15056/84 and successfully tested in a pilot plant with a 32 kW MAN diesel engine.
The aim of this present development project is the construction of a prototype surface-independent underwater energy supply system with an argon cycle diesel engine (100kW), and its testing in a work submergible under practical operating conditions. In this way the operational suitability of this autonomous energy supply system as generating plant in submarines, underwater work stations, diver habitats, etc. in the offshore technology sector is to be demonstrated.
MOTARK (MOTOR IN ARGON-KREISLAUF / engine in argon cycle) is an alternative drive and power-supply system integrated in the offshore-working submarine "Seahorse 2", which belongs to Messr
. Bruker Meerestechnik.
The heart of the plant is a naturally aspirated diesel engine, MAN model D 2566 ME (100 kW, 1500 rpm), which can operate in a closed argon cycle independent of the outside air while the submarine is under water, and in the conventional manner after the vessel has surfaced.
Subsequent to cooling down carbon dioxide CO2, which is the combustion product of fuel and oxygen, was removed from the process gas in a chemical process with potassium hydroxide in a dual-stage rotary disintegrator. After another cooling cycle and a cyclonic condensate cleaning process oxygene was supplied to the argon carrier gas in measured quantities.
Governing of the MOTARK system and acquisition of the test data are performed by a custom-developed micro-processor unit.
The functional tests in the submarine as well as the subsequent underwater tests at shallow sea gave convincing evidence for the fact that this prototype unit is now ready for regular operation

The energy supply unit, consisting of the diesel engine, the closed argon gas circuit and the exhaust gas scrubber, together with the various auxiliarly systems, was designed and manufactured as a complete system for installation in the test machine room section of a submachine. This test section was developed by Merss. Bruker ( TH/13007/85) and its design data were oriented on the requirements of a small submarine for commercial applications.
The diesel engine will serve as energy source for the craft's hydraulic and propulsion system and for its generator. Envisaged is a combined operational mode - a closed argon cycle for submerged operation and an open air cycle for surface operation. Design criteria and boundary conditions for the energy supply unit were strongly influenced by the submarine's assumed operational profile. Consequently intensive coordination with Messr. Bruker was necessary in the design phase, in order to achieve optimal adaptation.
