DATA COLLECTION SYSTEM FOR THE GOBAN SPUR

Objetivo

To design, construct and evaluate offshore, a prototype low cost real time current measuring system to provide data by satellite link. To further develop a three dimensional software design package for application to riser systems and capable of incorporating both surface and subsurface environmental data.
Accordingly, important new knowledge will be gained with respect to deep sea currents and immediately applied to offshore engineering design calculations. The successful completion of the project will constitute a major advance in an area of great importance and present uncertainty. The results will also be of benefit to the Community generally through extrapolation of the current measurements to other areas and through commercial exploitation of the riser design package .
CURRENT METER MOORING
VHF data transmission link used rather than satellite link to avoid high user costs. After three month deployment a comparison of internally recorded data with the data received via the VHF link showed that a reasonable data return was achieved from the top current meter (80%) but that this reduced dramatically with increasing distance from the hydrophone. Good quality data from the two deeper meters some five hundred meters away was found non-existant. Acoustic link chosen for the 'in water' data path from current meters to surface transmitting buoy not powerful enough but system concept proven.
Further investigation proceeded with the current meters and a viable system was proposed by raising the power output of the acoustic transmissions. By fitting lithium batteries a one year deployment life could still be achieved. However towards the end of this year's phase it became clear that American technology had overtaken us. A prototype acoustic doppler current meter had been developed and trials seemed to indicate encouraging results.
RISER DESIGN
A software package for three dimensional riser analysis capable of incorporating environmental data was successfully achieved. The long run times for the program are a cause for concern and indicate that it may be only suited for applications on supercomputer. For these computers, the computer code would need to be vectorised in order to obtain the optimum advantage of existing parallel processing machines. The general present uncertainty with respect to the specification of vortex shedding loads in three dimensional analysis means that riser designers will be less likely to incur the processing costs required except in exceptionally severe cases.
Current Meter Mooring :
Phase 1 : initial feasibility study and review of equipment and operations.
Phase 2 : design of electronic components, deployment and testing.
Phase 3 : manufacture of final system and mooring design.
Phase 4 : field test of system for 6-12 months.
Phase 5 : post trial evaluation of results.
Riser design :
Phase 6 : extend present two dimensional package to three dimensions.
Phase 7 : include fluid currents and vortex shedding.
Phase 8 : modelling of vessel motions and random directional wave spectrum.
Phase 9 : process British Meteorological data and available observed data.
Phase 10 : execute demonstration riser designs.
