CAST STEEL NODE-ENGINEERING STUDY

Objective

To carry out an independent evaluation of the properties of a prototype cast steel node for use on offshore structures and to define acceptance levels and mechanical properties for specification criteria.
The project has demonstrated that a large complex node can be produced in a steel casting to a satisfactory quality and dimensional accuracy and that buried defects can be accurately located and sized by non destructive testing techniques.
The welding of normal steel fabricated tubulars to the cast members was accomplished entirely satisfactorily and actual and simulated defects were repaired by welding without loss of properties.
The mechanical properties of the casting were found to be within the specified target values. The results of the project give confidence in the ability to produce steel castings to replace complex fabrications with the resultant improvement in fatigue life.
The project covered the design and manufacture of a 70 ton multi tubular node typical of those used on tubular jacket structures . The implementation of an inspection procedure including destructive and non-destructive testing. The establishment of the mechanical properties throughout the casting. The reconciliation and verification of the defects shown to be present in the non -destructive tests by metallurgical examination and the validation of welding procedures for the repair of casting defects.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
